anyone has even the slight lead I would be soooo happy to hear from them.

Comments: Stephen Nobriga my grand father was born on Madeira on or about
Sept. 2, 1878, he went to the Boston area in the late 1800's, he supposedly
left Madeira to avoid the draft. He was part of a large family 14 or 16
children. I think that the last name João was somehow involved. I think the
name could be Estevão João something about using the mothers maiden name. He
settled in Staten Island in the early 1900's. He married Lilian Black a
native of Nova Scotia he may have entered the US from Canada. I am also
wondering about the name Nobriga, it seems almost native to Madeira, it is
seldom found elsewhere and it almost always can be traced back to Madeira.

BUT official records in GUYANA have no record of her birth. She died in New

___, ___, 1891, in British Guiana and the sections for name of father, birth
place of father, name of mother and birth place of mother are marked ? A book,
"The Portuguese of Guyana: A Study in Culture and Conflict" by Mary
Noel Menezes, R.S.M., details a significant immigration of Madeirans to British
Guiana beginning in 1835. By 1848, some 15,931 Portuguese immigrants had come
to the colony, most originally as indentured laborers, and virtually all from
Madeira. I suspect that my great-grandparents (paternal name Menezes) were
part of this group, and I seek information on their names, details of passage

Comments: Sarah Freitas Nobriga LeFavre died in Stoneham, MA, Aug. 5th, 1930
after giving birth to a daughter. Sarah was 33 years old and came to the US
in 1927. Her death certificate says that she came from Madeira and her
father's name was John Freitas and mother, Eulalia Gomes. This daughter has
been told very little about her mother who died giving birth to her and would
love to have answers to questions. All she knew was that her mother had been
married at least twice before (I'm assuming Nobriga is a married name) and
that she had other children living near Boston. I could not find immigration
records for Sarah Freitas so she probably was married when she came to the US.

ajuda.

Comments: I am looking for information about DOMINGO MADERAS/MADARIS who was born in Portugal
abt. 1620 and was in Virginia in the U.S. by 1640. He had a son Carlos ("Charles) MADERAS b. in
VA. We were told his last name was probably because he was of Madeiros Island and that some first
names were given of the days of the week (which Domingo is). We don't know his wife's name nor
who his parents are? Hope someone can help or direct me to where I can get help. Thanks.

Comments: My great, great grandmother,Luziea, met my great great grandfather, Jean Day, in Madeira.
Luziea's father was a wine merchant in Madeira, I think in Funchal. They had 3 children in Madeira
before returning to Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The children were Corrinne ( spelt several ways)
and twins Sophia Eliza and Eliza Sophia. After the birth of several more children the family together
with Jean's brother, James and his family immigrated to Melbourne Australia.

Subject: Historical Lineage

Comments: According to legend, and family heresay, I am to belive and understand my (family) lineage,
came from the Madeira Islands of Portugal, so the story goes. Now, after being handed a piece of paper
a year ago from my Aunt, (my mother's younger sister) I don't know what to belive at present. The paper
is a list of my relatives going back as far as my Great-Great Grandparents, who were born in Portugal.
John da Costa and Helena da Costa, are my maternal Great Grandparents. ( b. circa: Feb. 1869, d. 1958/
b. circa: Jan. 1877, d. 1962) Also, born in Portugal, presumably, according to this piece of paper in
Bertanha, Sao Miguel, in the district of Ponta Delgado, the Azores, this is what astounds me. Why have
I been told the Madeira Islands? The Portugese-Hawaiian historical book does not explain this that I
know of. John and Helena had 20 children, (Catholics, you know!) all born in Hawaii. Affectionally,
they were known to have the nicknames of, VO-VO, and VU-VU. My Grand-mother, (maternal, fifth in line
of 20) Mary (Maria) Katherine da Costa-Walker, died before I was born, 1902-1955. And, as of just
recently, my grand-Uncle, Justin(Justino) Costa passed away, the last of 20 living children ( 18th in
line, b. 1917, died this year June 2006). Majority of all my relatives are buried in St. Joeseph's
Catholic Cemetary in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii. Some are buried overseas, a few others', are buried across
the U.S. Apparently, according to legend, my GGGrand-parents were exiled to the Madeira Islands, from
a revolutionary Coup' on mainland Portugal, during the middle and/or 3rd quarter of the 19th century.
(I'm still trying to comprehend the connection between the Madeira Isl. and that of the Azores.) This is
what I know, what is said, is that we have (had) Royalty in our bloodline. My Ancestors are (said) to
have been Cousins to the Queen; What Queen? What Court? What Monarchy/ and or Dynasty? And, through
which bloodline? How did they end up on the Madeira Islands (Azores?), and what was the main reason to
immigrate to the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to the little known kingdom, then known as Maui, Hawaii?
What did they (my Ancestors) sacrafice over the Coup' de tat that caused them to relinquished major
titles, huge land, and great fortune? This is my curiosity, not to mention, My Legacy that I want and
need to learn. I have no claim, and I could care less. I need to prove or disprove my family ancestral
lineage. After all, I need know , how my Great-Grandfather became a land Baron and Rancher in Makawao,
Maui, Hawaii. I've always pictured him as this Mark Twain type of character. Any information regarding
my heritage would be greatly appreciated in advance, therefore, please go ahead and email me with
whatever stories and or facts you may have. Thank-you and Mahalo!

Surnames: Serena, Vieira, De’Abreu, Caldeira
Comments: My great-grandmother, Maria Calderia (Caldeira) was born circa 1905. My great-grandfather,
Marceal/Marsial Vieira Serena was born October 1900. My great-grandmother came to South Africa from
Madeira, Portugal and my great-grandfather from either Lisbon or Madeira, Portugal. I am not sure what
years they came through to South Africa. They were not married at the time they left Portugal so I am
not sure whether they met one another in Portugal or only met in South Africa. They were married in
Benoni, Transvaal (now Gauteng), South Africa – I am not sure what year they were married. We think that
my great-grandmother’s mother was named Mathilde but this is yet to be confirmed. We also think that my
great-grandmother’s maiden name was De’Abreu but we are still trying to confirm this, hence the reason
for me researching all the above surnames. My great-grandparents had 10 children, namely: Lourdes
(I think she was deceased at the age of about 19 years – she was born with down-syndrome, date of birth
unknown, date of death unknown), Adelino Serena (he was known to us by his nickname, Fatti
– born ..., deceased 27 November 2004 in Johannesburg, South Africa), Luiz Jose Vieira Serena
(born 8 November 1928, deceased 7 December 2003 in Durban, South Africa), Theresa Maria Serena
(born 14 August 193?, deceased April 2005), Angelina Clara Serena (my maternal grandmother
– born 6 August 1936, deceased 20 August 1990), Deloures Serena (born 9 February 1939,
deceased 16 September 1994), Beatrice Serena (born 14 March 194?, still living)
Cecilia Serena (born 194?, still living) Antonio (Tony) Vieira Serena
(born 194?, still living), and Lourenco (Lawrence) Serena (deceased as an infant from
consumption). Unfortunately this is the only information I have at this stage. If there is anyone out
there who can help me find out more about my family, please contact me by e-mail. Thank You!!
