Comments: I am researching my maternal great grandparents. My grandparents were: Manuel (maybe Piadad?) Cambra born in Medeiros, Portugal in 8/1876 and Alexandra Fernandes born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2/1890, died 1983 in Hayward, California. They married in Oakland, CA 1905 and Manuel and Alexandra had 5 children 2 boys, Manuel and William and 3 girls, Alice, Violet and Ida. I am searching for any information regarding any ancestors and descendents. If anyone has even the slight lead I would be soooo happy to hear from them. Grandfather had at least two siblings Tony born 1877, and Mary born 1888. May 1999.

Village: Unknown
Surnames: Lido, Nobriga, Estevão João
Comments: Stephen Nobriga my grand father was born on Madeira on or about Sept. 2, 1878, he went to the Boston area in the late 1800's, he supposedly left Madeira to avoid the draft. He was part of a large family 14 or 16 children. I think that the last name João was somehow involved. I think the name could be Estevão João something about using the mothers maiden name. He settled in Staten Island in the early 1900's. He married Lilian Black a native of Nova Scotia he may have entered the US from Canada. I am also wondering about the name Nobriga, it seems almost native to Madeira, it is seldom found elsewhere and it almost always can be traced back to Madeira.

Surname: Menezes
Comments: My maternal grandmother, Caroline Menezes, was supposedly born in Buxton, British Guiana in January 1889, according to a passport application, BUT official records in GUYANA have no record of her birth. She died in New York on June 11, 1926, but her death certificate lists her date of birth as ___, ___, 1891, in British Guiana and the sections for name of father, birth place of father, name of mother and birth place of mother are marked ? A book, "The Portuguese of Guyana: A Study in Culture and Conflict" by Mary Noel Menezes, R.S.M., details a significant immigration of Madeirans to British Guiana beginning in 1835. By 1848, some 15,931 Portuguese immigrants had come to the colony, most originally as indentured laborers, and virtually all from Madeira. I suspect that my great-grandparents (paternal name Menezes) were part of this group, and I seek information on their names, details of passage to British Guiana and information regarding their history in Madeira.

Comments: Boy what a family History. My mother has all the details. Maderia Guyana the west Indies. Each year I meet a new 4th or 5th cousin here in Australia or so it seems. There is a Sydney and a Melbourne group of the family. Names include Marques Caldiera or Just Caldiera, Teixiera, JJ Da Silva, Gomez Pestano (Pistana). Madeira and Lisbon involved. The family tree is pretty developed and we have one old relative with all the details as well as my mother. We must be connected to someone. I'm looking for the historical context and any other details I can find. There are enourmous number of children in all the families. One third cousin told me his aunt had 22 children when he left Guyana - 35 years ago and he heard that she had several others after this. My mother is from a family of 14 and 11 was a common number of children it seems in generations before this. Elizabeth.

Comments: My GGrandfather name as I know it was Isaac Frates, the 1880 census has birth place as Madeira. His wife was Dance Silva. They had one son, Joseph C. Fraters, I know of, born in 1870, Oakland CA. Isaac Frates moved to Lemoore CA. and was a saloon keeper in the 1880s. Joseph C. Fraters my grandfather work in the 1880 for Herman Nathan. It was during this period that my grandfather change the spelling on his name from Frates to Fraters, I believe. My Grandfather could have change the spelling on his name also. Any assistance in following time back would be appreciated. I never met my grandfather, I have little to no information about him. The information I have gathered has been from census reports and kind people assisting me. I feel very strongly he was from Madiera because of the 1880 census. I believe this is the first time Isaac felt safe. His past seems very shadowed for some reason.

Comments: Sarah Freitas Nobriga LeFavre died in Stoneham, MA, Aug. 5th, 1930 after giving birth to a daughter. Sarah was 33 years old and came to the US in 1927. Her death certificate says that she came from Madeira and her father's name was John Freitas and mother, Eulalia Gomes. This daughter has been told very little about her mother who died giving birth to her and would love to have answers to questions. All she knew was that her mother had been married at least twice before (I'm assuming Nobriga is a married name) and that she had other children living near Boston. I could not find immigration records for Sarah Freitas so she probably was married when she came to the US. Any help would be appreciated.

I would like ANY INFORMATION on the COMACHO name. what part of Madeira? When did the Comacho's arrive etc etc. The names of the Comacho's are Manuel (my great-great grandfather), his brothers George and Fred. Manuel may have been born in the 1890s. When Manuel got to Guyana he married Marjorie Brumell, the daughter of the 'British Colonial Administrator/Shefiff of the County of Demerara'. I am 17 years old (soon to be 18 on Saturday) and I am finding it a little difficult to find out about my family because of the lack of information that was passed down through generations. This is largely due to that grandparents grew up in the Caribbean culture which dictated 'children must be seen and not heard'. Thank you.

Comments: Both my Paternal and Maternal great grandparents are presumed to have gone to British Guiana from the island of Madeira. I do not know the precise island, Concelho nor Parish. I do have a photo of him and his wife Mary/Marie Kaseira (sp?) that must date to the latter 1800’s. I do not know his first name though it may be Joseph. I lived in Guiana/Guyana for 28 yrs. Only knew my paternal grandmother - Claudia - of that generation. I am attempting to trace from my Great grandparents backwards. They had three sons:
Joseph: 1878~1948: all that is known is that he was born sometime in 1878, died 16.Apr.1948 and was married to TiTi Addie, probably Adelaide. No other record of this line.
Francis Borges: 10.Oct.1894~03.Jun.1949: Married Claudia Nunes on 29.Apr.1918 and had Frank, Doris, Claude - (my dad), Estella (Ontario), Lloyd, Asolita (Ontario), John (Ontario), Carl, Vera, Henry, and twins that died. Frank married Isobel and lived in Venezuela. It is not known if he is still alive. I am the Keeper of all the details on his downline in an Excel master file and while I should be able to locate all who are around now, my main focus is on the great grandparents and before, going back to Madeira and any other unknown parallel branches.
John Marcelinus: 16.Jan.18??~02.Jun.1972: Married Olidia Moura 16.Nov.1916 and had Dionesa Juliet (Ontario), Eustace, Compton, Bernard (Texas or Venezuela) and Carmen ‘Baby’. Locations in (brackets) after names denote persons still alive to this date 12.June.2005. Should anyone reading this have any information that would help, kindly email me. Francis' wife Claudia, kept a book of names and dates that has proven invaluable. I have created a viewable ‘Tree’ on Ancestry.com and visit the Message Boards there occasionally.

Comments: I am looking for information about DOMINGO MADERAS/MADARIS who was born in Portugal abt. 1620 and was in Virginia in the U.S. by 1640. He had a son Carlos ("Charles) MADERAS b. in VA. We were told his last name was probably because he was of Madeiros Island and that some first names were given of the days of the week (which Domingo is). We don't know his wife's name nor who his parents are? Hope someone can help or direct me to where I can get help. Thanks.

Comments: My great, great grandmother,Luziea, met my great great grandfather, Jean Day, in Madeira. Luziea's father was a wine merchant in Madeira, I think in Funchal. They had 3 children in Madeira before returning to Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The children were Corrinne ( spelt several ways) and twins Sophia Eliza and Eliza Sophia. After the birth of several more children the family together with Jean's brother, James and his family immigrated to Melbourne Australia.

Comments: According to legend, and family heresay, I am to belive and understand my (family) lineage, came from the Madeira Islands of Portugal, so the story goes. Now, after being handed a piece of paper a year ago from my Aunt, (my mother's younger sister) I don't know what to belive at present. The paper is a list of my relatives going back as far as my Great-Great Grandparents, who were born in Portugal. John da Costa and Helena da Costa, are my maternal Great Grandparents. ( b. circa: Feb. 1869, d. 1958/ b. circa: Jan. 1877, d. 1962) Also, born in Portugal, presumably, according to this piece of paper in Bertanha, Sao Miguel, in the district of Ponta Delgado, the Azores, this is what astounds me. Why have I been told the Madeira Islands? The Portugese-Hawaiian historical book does not explain this that I know of. John and Helena had 20 children, (Catholics, you know!) all born in Hawaii. Affectionally, they were known to have the nicknames of, VO-VO, and VU-VU. My Grand-mother, (maternal, fifth in line of 20) Mary (Maria) Katherine da Costa-Walker, died before I was born, 1902-1955. And, as of just recently, my grand-Uncle, Justin(Justino) Costa passed away, the last of 20 living children ( 18th in line, b. 1917, died this year June 2006). Majority of all my relatives are buried in St. Joeseph's Catholic Cemetary in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii. Some are buried overseas, a few others', are buried across the U.S. Apparently, according to legend, my GGGrand-parents were exiled to the Madeira Islands, from a revolutionary Coup' on mainland Portugal, during the middle and/or 3rd quarter of the 19th century. (I'm still trying to comprehend the connection between the Madeira Isl. and that of the Azores.) This is what I know, what is said, is that we have (had) Royalty in our bloodline. My Ancestors are (said) to have been Cousins to the Queen; What Queen? What Court? What Monarchy/ and or Dynasty? And, through which bloodline? How did they end up on the Madeira Islands (Azores?), and what was the main reason to immigrate to the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to the little known kingdom, then known as Maui, Hawaii? What did they (my Ancestors) sacrafice over the Coup' de tat that caused them to relinquished major titles, huge land, and great fortune? This is my curiosity, not to mention, My Legacy that I want and need to learn. I have no claim, and I could care less. I need to prove or disprove my family ancestral lineage. After all, I need know , how my Great-Grandfather became a land Baron and Rancher in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii. I've always pictured him as this Mark Twain type of character. Any information regarding my heritage would be greatly appreciated in advance, therefore, please go ahead and email me with whatever stories and or facts you may have. Thank-you and Mahalo!

Surnames: Serena, Vieira, De’Abreu, Caldeira
Comments: My great-grandmother, Maria Calderia (Caldeira) was born circa 1905. My great-grandfather, Marceal/Marsial Vieira Serena was born October 1900. My great-grandmother came to South Africa from Madeira, Portugal and my great-grandfather from either Lisbon or Madeira, Portugal. I am not sure what years they came through to South Africa. They were not married at the time they left Portugal so I am not sure whether they met one another in Portugal or only met in South Africa. They were married in Benoni, Transvaal (now Gauteng), South Africa – I am not sure what year they were married. We think that my great-grandmother’s mother was named Mathilde but this is yet to be confirmed. We also think that my great-grandmother’s maiden name was De’Abreu but we are still trying to confirm this, hence the reason for me researching all the above surnames. My great-grandparents had 10 children, namely: Lourdes (I think she was deceased at the age of about 19 years – she was born with down-syndrome, date of birth unknown, date of death unknown), Adelino Serena (he was known to us by his nickname, Fatti – born ..., deceased 27 November 2004 in Johannesburg, South Africa), Luiz Jose Vieira Serena (born 8 November 1928, deceased 7 December 2003 in Durban, South Africa), Theresa Maria Serena (born 14 August 193?, deceased April 2005), Angelina Clara Serena (my maternal grandmother – born 6 August 1936, deceased 20 August 1990), Deloures Serena (born 9 February 1939, deceased 16 September 1994), Beatrice Serena (born 14 March 194?, still living) Cecilia Serena (born 194?, still living) Antonio (Tony) Vieira Serena (born 194?, still living), and Lourenco (Lawrence) Serena (deceased as an infant from consumption). Unfortunately this is the only information I have at this stage. If there is anyone out there who can help me find out more about my family, please contact me by e-mail. Thank You!!

Comments: My Grandfather (b. April 17, 1877) came to Hawaii from Madeira--his death certificate listed him as a Mechanical Engineer living in Paia, Maui, Hawaii when he died in an accident Feb 21, 1931. (He apparently spent time in California--he owned some land in the Los Angeles area.) My Grandmother Mary Querido/Coelho (Aug 16 1898-Sep 20, 1982) took the family to Honolulu--remarried to Frank Enos. I'm trying to trace his (and her) family back-her father was Manuel Coelho [b abt 1880] -- apparently he took this name from his cousins that he traveled to Hawaii with from Madeira--he later told his family his name was actually Querido.

Comments: I am in search of any and all family members.  John da Costa and Helena da Costa are my great grandparents.  I was told that they originally came from the Azores and their parents came from the Madeira Island.  This is a huge, huge family.  I have been told that they owned over 800 acres of Maui land and they owned a vast portion of Azores land. John's brother, Antone, had 18 kids and was located in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii with him.  I recently saw paperwork where each of John's surviving 20 kids were given an acre of Maui land.  From my knowledge, there are family members that still live in the original Makawao home.

I read an article above on this site from Ross Bosque, where we might have had a royal bloodline.  I'm now very interested in this because the information that I have heard might be true and is the reason why they have a record of traveling a lot in those times (to France) and owning a lot of land.

Some of the daughters from John and Helena da Costa moved from Hawaii to California.  Cecila is my grandmother.  She is the one of the youngest along with Justin.  Her other sisters that I was able to meet as a child before they passed were Justina, Rose, Helen and Theresa.  I have for many years asked questions about their heritage and where we come from, but my parents don't know much.  Most of what I know is from what my grandmother, Cecila, told me as a young child before she passed.

I have the valuable Portuguese/Hawaiian book along with the original family photo.  If anyone has any information they would like to share, I'd be more than happy to do so.  For years, I have dreamt of having a family reunion.  At times this seems impossible because of how large our family is and how everyone is spread out throughout the States.  Then I remind myself that nothing is impossible and maybe we can all make this family reunion happen.
Please contact me by email or telephone, above. Thank you, Christina
