Kevin Nunes, 35 Kendra Lane, Taunton, Mass 02780
Email: kddkgen@tmlp.com
Date submitted: Sun, 24 Oct 1999
Surnames: Nunes, Berbeito(?)
Comments: 1. Antonio Nunes, born approximately 1843-1853 (guessing) on Madeira. 2. He married Maria DeJesus. 3. They had at least one child, Manuel Nunes, born July 9th, 1873, in Madeira, we believe Funchal. It was his death certificate that provided the information. 4. He married Carlota Barbeito (born March 20, 1873) in the 1890's, she was from Calheta, Madeira. 5. They had three children that lived, one of which, Manuel Nunes (born Aug 12, 1899, same name) was my grandfather. 6. Entire family came to U.S., older family members remember being told the date of April 1, 1906.
I have new and updated information. Over the weekend I received an English translation of my Grandfathers Baptism Certificate. It is a hand written paper but legible. From it I can confirm the following:
1. My grandfather, Manuel Nunes (born Aug 12, 1899, Funchal) was baptised on September 3, 1899 in "This parish church of Santa Maria Maior, district and diocese of Funchal"
2. His father, also Manuel Nunes, was born July 9, 1873, in the parish of Ponta da Sol, district of the same name of this diocese.
3. His mother, Carlota Barbeito, was born March 20, 1873 in Arco Da Calheta, district of Calheta, of this same diocese.
4. His parents Manuel and Carlota, were married in the Cathedral of this town (Funchal?)
5. The family lived in the Quinta do Acciaioli.
6. Paternal grandparents were listed as Antonio Nunes and Ana de Jesus. Sources obtained before, claimed her name was Maria de Jesus. Since this is the first source I have obtained from Madeira, I will take Ana de Jesus as the excepted name until sources prove otherwise.
7. Maternal grandparents were listed as José Barbeito and Jesuina da Incarnacao.

His name was changed to Joaquin somewhere in the records at that time. My grandmothers name was Maria Pereira Joaquin. Their Children's names were Gloria, Georgina, Isabella and Joseph and Delphina. From the same village (Funchal Madeira Island) my father left for the east coast in about 1911. His name was also Charles Pereira. His mothers name was Virginia and his fathers name was Manuel (I think). His father died in Madeira. His mother and five of my fathers siblings came to Buffalo New York after my father worked off their passage. Their names were Joseph, Manuel, Natalie, Eva and Tony (who changed his surname to Perry). I am looking for any information on their ancestry and\or decedents. I am also willing to furnish over six hundred names that I have accumulated in my family tree data base.

Joao Sr. died in Funchal on Oct.1,1896 and his wife died on June 21, 1911. My Grandfather came to Hawaii on the Thomas Bell and it was his journal about the voyage that was published. My Grandfather had 2 sisters, Maria and Rosa, who never married. I have an old address (100 years old) for them at Rua do Brigadeiro Couceiro No. 29, Funchal. The only other thing I have is a mention of a church - Church of the Virgem Santissama do Monte. Also, his journal is dedicated to Mrs. M. T. M. d'Oliveira which was assumed to be dedicated to his mother but the initials do not correspond with her name as I have it. Any informatiion about any relatives would be appreciated.

Surname: d'Oliveira Dos Santos
Comments: My great-grandfather,ANTONIO d'OLIVEIRA dos SANTOS, died on Oct.1, 1896 in Funchal at the parish of Sao Pedro. At the time of his death, he was 73 so his birth year must have been around 1823. In his obituary, his parents were listed as Francisco d'Oilveira dos Santos of Funchal and Maria de Jesus from San Martin. He left a wife and children. His wife's name was Maria or Mariam Brettam(?). It was at this point where the film we were viewing his obituary on became very dark and hard to read. We do know that his wife must have been his second wife as he was listed as a widower in 1859, which was when my grandfather, JOAO BAPTISTA d'OLIVEIRA was baptized. My grandfather, Joao Baptista d'Olveira, was born out of wedlock as we just found out, but as the obituary of my great-grandfather stated, he left a wife and children. So there must be relatives of my grandfather, be it half-brothers or half-sisters and their descendants somewhere in the world. There are so many questions left unanswered. Antonio claimed his paternity by being there at Joao's baptism but there is a rumor that my grandfather may have been adpoted later on but by whom and when, I don't know. I do know that someone cared enough to give hima proper education as my grandfather, Joao, read and wrote in 3 languages, English, French and Portguese and he worked for the British Consulate in Madeira before emigrating to Hawaii in 1887. Joao was the author of the Journal of the "Thomas Bell" which he wrote on his trip aboard this Bark from Madeiro to Hawaii. If there is anyone out there who has any of these names in their family trees, I would appreciate hearing from you and hearing your family remembrances. Thank you.
