Comments: I live in Santos on the southeast of Brazil. My grandparents
immigrated in 1939 from Madeira under very strange circumstances. Apparently
they came to Brazil in order to fulfill a plan both their families disapproved
- marriage! I am really interested to know all the facts about it. Although
the branch of the family living here in Brazil has completely lost contact
with the ones who remained in Portugal, I am sure we still have many relatives
living in Madeira. I would also like to get in touch with them. My grandfather's
name was José Nunes de Abreu. His parents' names were José de Abreu Junior and
Adelaide Augusta Nunes (Spanish??). He lived in Sitio do Rancho, Camara de
Lobos. My grandmother's name was Maria da Conceição. Her parents' names were
José Rodrigues and Filomena de Araujo, also living in Camara de Lobos. What
can I do to be able to get this information?

Comments: I have information from Santa Maria Maoir (surname Pinto, Rodrigues)

Comments: Ha tempos fiz pessoalmente uma pesquisa na Ilha da Madeira e
consegui encontrar varios sobrenomes que compõem minha genealogia. Pesquisei
nos livros do Arquivo da Madeira através dos casamentos de meus antepassados,
começando com meus avós. As indicações do início de minha pesquisa são as
seguintes B.19 L 306 Câmara de Lobos 07/12/1842. Refere-se ao nacimento de
meu avô Antônio Figueira de Faria. Os sobrenomes acima foram encontrados a
partir deste dado e chega além de Manoel de Ornellas da Sylva com Eleonor Dias
pais de Francisco Ornellas da Silva C. 21/01/1747 L Fls 53 V. Há porém lacunas
na pesquisa, que não avançou muito por parte de minha avó Rita de Cassia de
Jesus, filha de Julio Pinto de Faria e Victorina dos Reis. Todos os sobrenomes
citados acima referem-se, portanto, aos antepassados do meu avô. Mas, como se
pode ver, eram poucas famílias cruzando-se através dos tempos. Ela mesma
trazia os sobrenomes Pinto e Faria. Com certeza procede dos mesmos troncos,
mas não pude encontrar as ligações.

Comments: my great grandfather was Antonio Jose (Joseph) Pestana b. circa June 1862 in Camara de Lobos d.
circa 1924 Georgetown, British Guiana, South America. Antonio married Maria de Nobriga b. circa 1861 1862
in Camara de Lobos d. circa 1932, 33, 34 Georgetown, British Guiana S.A.. Maria was 6 years old when she
arrived from Maderia to Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana. (Source, Ellis Island Manifest 1924). Antonio’s
father was Jose (Joseph) Pestana b. circa 1837 and his Mother was Maria de Jesus b. circa 1830. Maria’s
father was Emmanuel de Nobriga – I have no dates And her mother was Maria de Nobriga – I have no dates. I
have been researching for what seems like ages to find my missing uncle. I am about to stop this costly
research as I always thought that genealogy was about people helping people, but there is always a pricy
tag to everything. I cannot bridge my roots from Madeira to South America. Mother is still alive and often
wonders what happened to her beloved brother, last contact was via a post card from Prince Georges Wharf
in Nassau, Bahamas. My ancestors hail from Madeira, I have reason to believe it was Madeira (Camara De Lobos).
My great grand parent came to S.A. at an early age and when I have looked at ship manifests it only list
parents name and child. I only have circa dates and cannot bridge this important missing gap and cannot spend
anymore to find my missing uncle.

Comments: Distrito de Funchal... Manuel Rodrigues, casado, natural da
freguesia de Camara de Lobo, onde era morador no Sitio das Fontes... filho de
Antonio Rodrigues e Antonia de Jesus. Imigrou para o Brasil em 1914.
Passaporte tirado em 09 de janeiro de 1914. Eram moradores em Funchal no
sitio das Fontes. O nome do meu avo era Joao Rodrigues Fontes. Outro parente
emigrou para o Brasil - Rio de janeiro. Seu nome era Augustinho Araujo de
souza, em 1938. Todos os das Fontes seriam meus familiares.

Comments: I am researching my great-grandfather José (Juca) Fernandes’ family who arrived in
Brazil abt. 1875. They arrived in Santos. His parents names are: João Fernandes and his wife
Maria (I do not know her maiden name). José was born in 1870 in Campanário. He met and married
Eulália Iglesias Garcia in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil around 1815. They had two children who died
in Curitiba (stillborn boy, and a girl named Isadora after her late maternal Grandmother in
Spain) and another four in Santos (Iracema, Antonio (Tico), José Jr. (Juquinha) and Helena)
until Eulália died. José met another woman by whom he had another three children (Milton, Paulo
and Erasmo), but never re-married. Juca died in Guarujá approx. 1971. Any information on this
family in Madeira is most welcome. Thank you.
Comentários: Estou pesquisando a família de meu bisavô José (juca) Fernandes que desembarcou no
Brasil aproximadamente em 1875 no porto de Santos. Nomes dos pais: João Fernandes e Maria
(desconhecido o sobrenome de solteira). José nasceu em 1870 em Campanário. Ele conheceu e
casou-se com Eulália Iglesias Garcia em Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil aproximadamente em 1815. Juntos
tiveram dois filhos que morreram ainda bebês: um menino nati-morto e uma menina chamda Isadora
em homenagem a sua falecida avó materna espanhola, e outros quarto filhos em Santos, São Paulo
(Iracema, Antonio (Tico), José Jr. (Juquimha, e Helena) quando então Eulália morreu. José chegou
a conhecer e se amigar com outra mulher com quem teve mais três filhos (Milton, Erasmo e Paulo),
mas jamais casou-se novamente. Juca morreu no Guraujá, São Paulo aproximadamente em 1971.
Qualquer informação sobre esta família na Ilha da Madeira sera muito bem-vinda. Antecipadamente
agradeço.

Comments: im still of first generation portuguese as i was born in madeira
but in none of the lugares above. I was born in Funchal but then moved to the
parish of santana and then on to england. Im just trying to find the
descendency of the names above especially farraia and aguiar as they are very
uncommon portuguese names especially farraia. so if anybody out there can
help, please do! The name couldnt possibly be FERREIRA as that name appears
somewhere else in the family tree, my paternal grandfathers mothers maiden
name was farraia, and he is known throughout his "Lugar" Achada de marques,
which is part of 'sitio da Ilha' in Sao Jorge as just Farraia because the
name is so unusual, thats why im trying to find out where it possibly came
from, even thought it is similar to ferreira i doubt it has any link with it.
Also another name i came accross recently was: 'CAI-AGUA'. I know it means
'falling water', but still it intrigues me that my family have such strange
names!

Comments: Antonio Pereira O Ferro, name O Ferro may have started as a nick
name with Antonio. Not sure if this is true his parrents were João Rodrigues
and Maria de Faria. Records of their parrents are lost. His (Antonio's)
grandfather was Martim Gonçalves and grandmother Isabel Rodrigues, married
around 1625. Looking for help. Wondering if family name is Pereira, Rodrigues,
de Faria, or Gonçalves? A bit lost here.

Comments: No ano de 1912 imigou para o Brasil com a esposa Antonia de Jesus.
Pela carta qeu tenho, nao da para entender o endereco no envelope Joao
Rodrigues Estreito de Camara de...(nao da para ler) Sitio das Fontes Ilha da
madeira Funchal. Sei que Manuel Rodrigues do tinha um irmao que vivia em
Funchal, no sitio das Fontes. Chaamva se Joao Rodrigues. Obrigada.
