Comments: It's interesting to note that the village of Ereira actually borders
Macussa (thus the family connections), even though both villages are in altogether
different "conselhos" and even Districts. For all practical purposes though, the
Conselho de Azambuja (even though it's politically part of the Lisbon District)
- is really a geographic portion of Ribatejo. The Vieira Family (or my part of
it) may also have some ties to Lisbon, since my maternal grandfather and his
father lived there at one point, but they are interred in a mausoleum within
the Ereira cemetery (their ancestral roots).Beyond that I don't know much more,
especially about any of the Filipes, Amarals, or Varinos in Macussa.

Comments: I wrote to you about my grandfather and you posted his story on your
web page. I just found out that he came over on the ship Lusitania on Sept. 5,
1912 into NY. He came under another name and that's why I couldn't find him,
but I kept digging. He came under the name Louis Canas. I sent for a copy of
the ships passenger lists. I got a copy of his info on his green card in hopes
that the name of the village would be on it. It only listed Lisbon, Portugal,
no village. I will wait for the copy of the passenger list and hope that the
name will be there. The man's name that he used, I'm assuming he must've known
and hopefully the village will be there even if it's under Louis's name. I will
let you know.

Comments: I was told my great grandmother Marion Perry came from Lisbon,
Portugal, and my great-grandfather Gideon Gomes, from the Cape Verde Islands.
I don't have any concrete evidence to support these dates but here goes.
Gideon birth year 1858 - Marion 1868. They had nine children that all lived
in Cape Cod, Ma. The first was born in 1885. Two of their sons Joseph and
Peter owned two very popular night spots, The Twin Villa, (Osterville, Ma.)
and The Park (Mashpee, Ma.). Neither one of them had children. Another of
their children Mary Gomes born in 1901, married Manuel Barboza in 1919.
I was told they married in Harwich, Ma. These are my grandparents. Mary
died in 1931, and Manuel died around 1968. They had three children Norman,
Barbara, and Walter. Walter is my father. As far as my Father knows Manuel
Barboza was born on the Cape Verde Islands, and settled in Falmouth Ma. He
has a brother Tony, three sisters, Mino ?, Julia, and Alice.

Locations: Lisbon, Bivar near Burgos, Spain
Comments: Rodrigo (alias Jacob) Soares de Bivar was a Jewish _converso_ in
Lisbon in 1726. He was married to Isabel (Rahel) Nunes Ribeiro. Being forced
Catholic converts, they must have married according to Catholic rite, but one
does not know whether in Lisbon, or how long they had been in Portugal. Rodrigo
presumably originated from the village of Bivar in Castile. Towards the end of
July 1726, with their three daughters Gracia, Theresa and Sarah, and members of
the related Nunes Ribeiro family, they induced the captain of an English
packet-boat to allow them on board, and engineer their escape to England. The
story is related by R.D. Barnett, "Zipra Nunes's story" in Bertram Wallace Korn
(ed.), _A bicentennial Festschrift for Jacob Rader Marcus_ , American Jewish
Historical Society, Waltham, Mass., and KTAV Publishing House Inc. , New York,
1976 pp. 47-61. Zipra was apparently the Jewish name of Maria Caetana, Isabel's
baby sister, who after the escape emigrated with her family to Savannah, moving
later to Charleston, and finally New York, where she married a Rabbi, David
Mendes Machado, apparently her cousin. Rodrigo remanined in England, and is
recorded in the records of the Bevis Marks synagogue in London as having
undergone circumcision there (forbidden of course in Portugal), and later
re-married Isabel according to Jewish rite. Since her surname in the entry is
given as the same as her husband's, she had evidently been married to him
previously under the Catholic rite, as noted above. Therefore a marriage
record, and probably baptismal records of her three children, should surely
exist in old registers somewhere in the Peninsula. But how could one trace
them, unless they are indexed somewhere? Evidently there are still Bivars in
Lisbon, perhaps not related, as some years ago I bought a tin of Portugese
sardines processed by a Bivar cannery! Perhaps there are descendants of the
father, Dr Diego Nunes Ribeiro, in Savannah or Charleston.

who came to America in the early 1900's. Thomazia Rose Ferreira, born 15
Feb. 1899, parents Joao Ferriera and Albina Rose Mo?teiro, social security
application says she was born in Porto, Portugal. Her father worked for
the conciliate in Portugal. She came to America with a female cousin,
Amelia, to Glouster, Mass. She met Julio Claudio and married him in
Rhode Island. He was in the merchant marines and I believe came through
Canada. He was born 9 Jan. 1898 in Lisbon, his parents were Jose Claudio
and Rosaria Carvalho. He had younger cousin who was a big soccer player.
They settled in Brentwood, NY and had their children. Thomazia kept in
touch with her family back in Portugal, but when she past away her address
book disappeared. That is all the info I have and would love to find more.
Julio, Thomazia and their 2 children all died in the 70's.

Comments: My Great Grandfather's name was Manuel Skerry. He came to Boston or
New York sometime in the late 1890s from Lisbon. My Mother told me the Skerry
name was shortened from something like "Skerryasotoli" when my Great Grandfather
got here.. (for obvious reasons!) My Mother has since died and she never did know
the original spelling. My Great Grandfather married a Portuguese immigrant woman
from Nova Scotia. I think her name was Katerina. They were my Grandmother's parents.
They lived in Boston. He was a milk man. I spoke to my great aunt when she was
in her late 90s (she was one of 3 or four daughters who included my Grandmother)
and she insisted her parents did not come from Portugal. (She claimed to not know
where they were from) My Mother told me the Skerry Family was sensitive about
being of Portuguese ancestry because there was prejudice against people of Portuguese
ancestry in the early part of the last century. My Mother said they WERE from
Portugal though. I recently returned from a trip to Portugal and have a renewed
interest in my Family history from that side of the family. There is no one left
in the Skerry side of my Mother's family. I was hoping someone might have an
idea how I could find out what Manuel Skerry's original name was.

Comments: My grandfather's name is Alfred Cross. He was born in Cambridge
MA on Sept 21, 1896. His father was Manuel Cruz; his mother Isabella Dunn.
I am trying to find information about Isabella. She died 8/1/1918 in
Plymouth, MA and the death record reads: Isabella Cruise; father Joseph A.
Gloria; mother Marianna; place of birth Azores, approx 1870. Her husband,
Manuel Cruz was from Lisbon, Portugal; but I don't know where they were
married or when. Some of the old papers that my father has say --Isabella
Gloria Dunn--. We have no pictures. There is a possibility that Isabella
may have been born in Scotland, even though her death records states the
Azors. I would appreciate any information on Isabella Dunn, Joseph A.
Gloria, Marianna Dunn, or Manuel Cruz.
