Genealogists who only know their ancestors came from somewhere in São Vicente, Republic of Cabo Verde:

Lynda Williams, Cardiff, South Wales, United Kingdom

Date submitted: before 1998
Village: unknown
Surnames: Silva
Island: Sao Vicente
Comments: My Great Grandfather Antonio Silva (married to Maria) and Grandfather Emmanuel Boaventura Silva came from Sao Vicente Cabo Verde. My Great Grandfather was on one of the first vessels entering the opening of a new dock in Cardiff and wrote home about the fiesta (one such vessel was the Manolo and American timber vessel). My Grandfather was born in Sao Vicente (nationalisation papers/marriage certificate show this) in September or October 1884. Name of Emmanuel Boaventura Silva, he had two sisters, Julia and Maria lots of cousins, one cousin Christina somewhere in Portugal. He left Cape Verde at the age of 14 yrs and worked on an American whaling vessel. He was married to Maria (no surname but she was adopted we think by the family Baptiste), when widowed he married my grandmother Nellie Jenkins (Cardiff) in 1933 ish. One of his sisters was a concert pianist and taught in Brazil for a while, she also had a business venture with a French woman (supplying crews' whites (uniforms)). We do not know if Marie married and went to Portugal or Holland maybe. He had a cousin who was a doctor and also another quite high office in the catholic church.
If anyone can assist I would be most grateful. Although the records office in Mindelo say that there was a fire and my grandfather's records were destroyed....

Rambo, San Diego, California
Email: Rambo12h@aol.com
Date submitted: Mon, 17 Jul 2006
Surname: Galvão
Comments: I am trying to locate relatives in Cape Verde and/or possibly Portugal. My grandfather John Verra Galvao immigrated from Cape Verde to the United States when he was approximately 15-years-old. He was born in approximately 1896. I believe he had a sister named Maria Dos Reis Borges living on the island of São Vicente. She has a son who may be living in Lisbon Portugal working as a doctor. She has another son possibly living in Praia. It is my understanding that he works or worked in some capacity for the government possibly in transportation.

He sailed to Liverpool having his arm amputated during the journey. He met my g/g grandmother Julia Hannigan who was from Cork and they got married in 1865. They had trillions of kids and lived in South Wales until they died. I have come to a dead end and am desperate to learn more.

Genealogists researching in the town of Mindelo, Island of São Vicente, Republic of Cape Verde:

Virginia M Souza-Bailey, (no address submitted)
Email: vmsouza-bailey@snet.net
Date submitted: Sat, 22 Jul 2000
Comments: My father, Peter Alcantara Souza, was born in Mindelo, Sao Vincente, in May 18, 1894 (his birth/baptismal papers, naturalization, driver's license all have different ages) to Virginia Sousa Lima. He was baptized on April 17, 1894 (according to his baptismal papers) in Sao Antao by Father Manuel Gomes and his Godmother was his aunt Maria do Rosario Sousa who lived in Sao Antao. His Godfather was Manuel Gomes Madeira Jr. His grandmother's name was Meletina Filipa de Sousa. The name Jose Francisco do Roasario was also on the baptismal paper. My father had several brothers and sisters, a sister went to Brazil (he wrote to her but lost touch) and, I think, a brother might have lived in California. When he was 14, he signed up on a whaling boat to the Antarctic Ocean (the Fridjof Nansen) as a mess boy. It hit iceburgs twice, and he talked of the icy waters and keeping their feet warm by putting them in the whale's belly so they wouldn't get frostbite, watching the penguins and the seals. He said he ate penguin eggs and whale meat on the trip to South Georgia Island and he talked of the wild sea and how it tossed them about during storms. He returned to Sao Vincente for a couple of years. My father left Sao Vincente around 1917 for America, and landed in New Bedford in 1918 when the Spanish Influenza epidemic hit. He talked of being on a cot in a room with hundreds of other victims, laying their waiting to get well or die. He lived and worked in New Bedford and married, later divorcing. He worked in the mills. After the mill closed during the Depression, he worked in the Bristol, New Britain and Waterbury, Connecticut area, playing tennis and even being in the papers for his tennis playing. He might have had a second marriage to a Jean F. Souza around 1932-1938, livjng on Hamilton Street in Hartford, Connecticut. He worked 37 years in Hartford, married Noreen Souza in 1945 and had two children, raising them in East Hartford. He took us to Portuguese picnics every summer, soccer games at the old Colts Field in Harford and festas in New Bedford, Mass. He was a member of the Portuguese Club of Hartford, The Portuguese Church in Hartford and spent many hours at the Portuguese Club reminiscing with his friends. He was a brave and kind man who always gave to othere who were less fortunate, perhaps, remembering his lean days and lonely times when he braved a vast ocean alone to find adventure in a new world. He died at the age of 96 and is loved and missed for his humor, sensitivity and generosity. I am looking for any information from anyone who recognizes these names that will help me with my search for my ancestry.
