Genealogists who only know their ancestors came from somewhere in Santo Antão, Republic of Cabo Verde:

Frank S. Rego, (no address submitted)
Email: frrego@telepak.net
Date submitted: Sun, 12 Sep 1999
Surname: Rego, Machado
Comments: I am looking for information on the REGO family. I believe my family came from Lagoa, Algarve although I do not think that that's where they were originated. From my mother's side, the MACHADOs came from the Island of Santo Antao, Cape Verde. Any link or information leading to these two names or derivatives would be greatly appreciated.

Virginia M Souza-Bailey, (no address submitted)

Date submitted: Sat, 22 Jul 2000
Comments: My father, Peter Alcantara Souza, was born in Mindelo, Sao Vincente, in May 18, 1894 (his birth/baptismal papers, naturalization, driver's license all have different ages) to Virginia Sousa Lima. He was baptized on April 17, 1894 (according to his baptismal papers) in Sao Antao by Father Manuel Gomes and his Godmother was his aunt Maria do Rosario Sousa who lived in Sao Antao. His Godfather was Manuel Gomes Madeira Jr. His grandmother's name was Meletina Filipa de Sousa. The name Jose Francisco do Roasario was also on the baptismal paper. My father had several brothers and sisters, a sister went to Brazil (he wrote to her but lost touch) and, I think, a brother might have lived in California. When he was 14, he signed up on a whaling boat to the Antarctic Ocean (the Fridjof Nansen) as a mess boy. It hit icebergs twice, and he talked of the icy waters and keeping their feet warm by putting them in the whale's belly so they wouldn't get frostbite, watching the penguins and the seals. He said he ate penguin eggs and whale meat on the trip to South Georgia Island and he talked of the wild sea and how it tossed them about during storms. He returned to Sao Vincente for a couple of years. My father left Sao Vincente around 1917 for America, and landed in New Bedford in 1918 when the Spanish Influenza epidemic hit. He talked of being on a cot in a room with hundreds of other victims, laying their waiting to get well or die. He lived and worked in New Bedford and married, later divorcing. He worked in the mills. After the mill closed during the Depression, he worked in the Bristol, New Britain and Waterbury, Connecticut area, playing tennis and even being in the papers for his tennis playing. He might have had a second marriage to a Jean F. Souza around 1932-1938, living on Hamilton Street in Hartford, Connecticut. He worked 37 years in Hartford, married Noreen Souza in 1945 and had two children, raising them in East Hartford. He took us to Portuguese picnics every summer, soccer games at the old Colts Field in Harford and festas in New Bedford, Mass. He was a member of the Portuguese Club of Hartford, the Portuguese Church in Hartford and spent many hours at the Portuguese Club reminiscing with his friends. He was a brave and kind man who always gave to others who were less fortunate, perhaps, remembering his lean days and lonely times when he braved a vast ocean alone to find adventure in a new world. He died at the age of 96 and is loved and missed for his humor, sensitivity and generosity. I am looking for any information from anyone who recognizes these names that will help me with my search for my ancestry.

Comments: I have an identification card for my husband's grandfather - Manuel Miguel Dias. He is the son of Miguel Antonio Dias and Martina Emília das Neves. He was born in Santo Antão de Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) on April 03, 1906. His profession is listed as laborer. He emigrated to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at some point after 1920. His wife's name was Alexandrina. He had 6 daughters: Marly, Zuleika, Jessy, Ivone, Maria Helena, Marlene. Any help in learning more about this family or how to research in Cape Verde would be greatly appreciated. (My husband speaks Portuguese, but I do not).

Surname: dos Santos, Santos
Commments: My grandfather Bartolomeu Jose dos Santos was born December 16, 1898 on the island of Sao Antao. He sailed to America between 1919-1930, landing in the New England area. I think he lived in Ansonia, Connecticut where he fathered a daughter with an American woman. he sailed back to Cape Verde but took with him the photo of his daughter. He later married my grandmother, Senhorinha Neves and had 3 sons, Herculano Alexander, Pedro Sena, and Antonio Santos. He also had a daughter Isabel. He died before he could come back to America. I am looking for any information about the daughter he left behind. I know the name of the ship that he sailed on was the Gadwin but I can't find anything on it. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
