Surnames: Pina Delgado, Tavares
Comments: My mother was the first generation born here. Her father was
Joaquim Pina Delgado from Brava she had a brother that was born in Brava
that she never met but always wanted to. My mother passed away last year
(1996) at the age of 76 never meeting her brother but I'm wondering
whether there is any one out there who can help me locate my uncle and his
family last known to still be alive and still living in Brava. My grandfather
married Marian Tavares before leaving the island and they both came to USA.
He also had a sister named Julia who married, Rufine Tavares, Marian Tavares'
brother (one they called DODO) who married Joe Alves, and a brother John
Pina whom all came to MA, USA and are all deceased. If anyone knows or
knew these families please e-mail me. Thanking you in advance.

Comments: When going through death, marriage and birth records, I found
that my grandparents on both sides came from Brava. I was under the impression
that my grandmothers came from Brava and my grandfathers came from Fogo.
The surnames of my grandmothers are Pena and Monterio. My grandfathers are
Gomes and Roderick. It is hard to get exact information because of American
spelling of Cape Veredan names are spelled wrong on town records.

arrived in New Zealand on board the whaling vessel "Adventeur" from Brava
about 1840. Both men settled in New Zealand, in a place they named Brava,
after their homeland. Iam a direct descendant of these men and would like to
know if anyone has any Gomez connections in their family tree that could be
traced to New Zealand. Emanuel is recorded as marrying Johanna Antoni in New
Zealand, also from Cape Verde, they had 21 children, some of which were
called Alice, Charles, Richard, Ester, John, Christina, Joseph. Any help

Comments: I am researching the above families, specifically the Silvas of
Brava who sailed out on the packet ship "Mathilde" in 1943 for the US. The
ship was lost at sea, last seen off the coast of Bermuda. Manuel Domingos
da Silva (my grandfather), his brothers (all but 2), his father Ramos, his
brother-in-law (name unknown), and others (whose names I do not know) were
all lost at sea. Ramos da Silva's wife was named Domingas. Manuel's wife's
name was Fortunata Torres Martins, daughter of Aurora Torres and Fortunato
Martins. I don't know what port the "Mathilde" sailed from only that the
families have ties to the villages of Cova Rodela, Sao Joao Baptista and
to Santa Barbara (parish unknown). If anyone has any info on the above
people, on the ship itself, or the shipwreck, please contact me at my email
address. I'd be willing to share any info I have. Thank you for your time.

Comments: Thomas (Tomas)Jose married Maria da Costa possibly in Portugal.
Thomas was a ship's carpenter. They were sent to the Cape Verde Islands
where they had 3 sons. John, Manuel and Hermenegildo. About 1877 the 3 boys
and a friend, Antonio Silveira, swam to a ship at anchor and sailed off to
America. Hermenegildo and Antonio then sailed on another ship to jump ship
off the coast of New Zealand. Apparently they weren't treated too kindly on
board or maybe they just didn't like whaling. I have a copy of Hermenegildo's
birth certificate from the Archives in Praia, Santiago which I visited in
September 2000. Being in long hand and Portuguese it is extremely difficult
to decipher but the entry was made on 29 June 1862?
During the second world war, sons of the other boys visited New Zealand
with the US Marines and the US Army. They did visit with my grandfather
while stationed at Pukekohe. One of the boys was named Chris. I eager to
contact any person who could help in my search.

I’m looking for information on my relatives and where my ancestors came from. I'm trying to trace my roots back as far as I can. I know my paternal grandfather's name was Herbert Lopes and my paternal grandmother is Julia Barboza. My grandfather was from the island of Brava. I recently found out that my grandmother married my paternal grandfather's cousin and he (Peter Andradé) adopted all her children so my father has his last name. I talked to one of my cousins to find this information out but I would really like to know more.
