Comments: My father came from Lisbon but was born in Braganca. His name was Antonio Jose de Lis. He changed the last letter in his name from s to z, because no one in the U.S. could pronounce it correctly. I know he had a sister who now lives in Paris, France whose name was Esmaralda Carp(name by marriage). I would like to know the origin of the name De Lis. I have heard everything from French to Greek to Spanish. It has been a very difficult search for me. There seems to be little or no information. I don't know my grandparents names but I know that my grandfather was the headpostmaster of the village. If you could assist me in any way, I would be grateful. Sincerely Linda Deliz

Comments: I am Portuguese by birth, but adopted. In 2000, I was able to obtain Court files for my adoption in 1954 (I was born in 1951) in Alameda County, CA. I know that my birthfather was Portuguese. I have always known of my Portuguese ancestry, but really no details. Only a last name. My birth name prior to adoption was: Celeste Maria Joaquin. Within the Court files I learned of my birth father's first name and from there, began a very extensive research project. This past week, I received another section of records to be added to my history results for this family. They are the Ship transcription records for my Grandparents passage from Oporto, Portugal aboard the S.S. Osteric/Orteric to Honolulu Hawaii in April 1911. These records were located for me by my Maxine Chism within those records at the PGHS in Honolulu, HI. Maxine has her family roots in Mirandella, Trás-os-Montes. I am currently working on determining which ship/route and incoming Port were the destinations of my family prior to their arrival in San Lorenzo, CA at or about September 18, 1914. (my birthfathers birthday) I don't know if they went straight from Hawaii to California, or followed similar migration patterns and went first to New Bedford or the East Coast and then on to CA.

Comments: Our branch of Carvalho family is natural from Beira Alta Portugal. Immigration to S.Paulo Brasil in the end on 19th century. Mainly location of family in Brasil: S.Paulo State - Capital (São Paulo City) - Bairro da Mooca. My Grandfather Jose Carvalho was born in Portugal on 03-Nov-1878 and died in Brasil on 22-Aug-1949. He travelled to Brasil by ship arriving in Rio de Janeiro on April 05, 1895. His parents were António Carvalho and Maria de Jesus. In Brasil José Carvalho married Dulcelina Delgado, born in 31-Jul-1884 and died 19/Sep/1953. The parents of Dulcelina Delgado were Donato Delgado and Maria Salamanca. The couple José Carvalho and Dulcelina Delgado had 4 sons and 2 daughters as follows: José Carvalho Filho(married Aurora Bienes Carvalho - she is still alive). Agostinho Carvalho (married Maria José da Costa Carvalho - Zezé - she is still alive). Luis Carvalho (married Olinda Paiva Carvalho - both dead). Mavilia Carvalho Teixeira (married Alberto Teixeira - both dead). António Carvalho (married Maria Conceição Pereira, both dead). Isaura Carvalho (married Antonio Martins, both dead). My name is Antonio José Carvalho. I am the son of Antonio Carvalho and Maria Conceição Pereira and I was born 10-Jun-1944 in S.Paulo - Capital). The parents of Maria Conceição Pereira were born in this same place in Portugal and were: Augusta Pereira (born 1875 and died in Brasil in 1944) and José Thomaz Pinto. I have one son named Luciano Constantini Carvalho, born in S. Paulo - Capital in 07/May/1971. He is single. I have also one daughter, Viviane Constantini Carvalho, born also in S. Paulo - Capital in 12/Feb/1975. She has a son, Rafael Carvalho Meirelles, born in 09/Oct/1995 in the city of São Bernardo do Campo - State of São Paulo - Brasil. This is the same place where my family lives now. This is a summary of our history. If anyone reading this is able to give some tips on how to find ancestors in Portugal please send me an email. There he married Albertina dos Santos, whose parents were Manuel Caetano and Luisa da Encarnacao. They sailed to Hawaii in 1911, on the Orteric with two small children, Antonio and Philimino. Francisco Manuel Aleixo, brother of Celestino Augusto Aleixo, his wife Anna Maria, and daughters Emilia and Beatriz. They sailed together to Hawaii, on the Orteric in 1911.
