Parish: Amares, Braga
Comments:
Mother: Born in Castelo do Neiva in the early 1960s, to Antonio Dias Vieira (son of Jose Maria Vieira Arezes
and Rosa Lima Dias) and Rosalina Martins Pires (daughter of Antonio Pires Carneiro and Custodia Martins
de Lage). My grandparents and mother emigrated to Canada in mid-1970. My great-grandparents were born in
the early-mid 1900s, the 1920s or so. I would appreciate more information as to the origins of these family
names, and any family history you could provide regarding my great grandparents and their ascendents. I believe
we are Moor descendents, mostly because of our colouring (dark olive skin, some family members have very
light coloured eyes - green and hazel). I would like to know where my ascendents are from and any
interesting stories you could provide.
Father: Born in Bouro Santa Maria in the late 1940s, a tiny mountain village, about one half hour drive
from Amares, Braga, to Ermelinda Domingues and Horacio de Jesus Loureiro. My grandparents lived in Portugal
their whole lives. My grandmother is still living in Bouro, my grandfather passed a couple of years
ago. I have little information about my grandparents; my grandmother was born in the 1920s, and had a
younger brother who lived in Canada (now deceased). My grandfather was born in the 1910s, and has quite
the family history. As I understand it, his mother and her first husband had 3 children and moved to
Brazil. Deciding she would rather live in Portugal, my great-grandmother moved back with the 3 children,
agreeing with her husband that he would fake his death and continue to live in Brazil under another name,
and she would tell their families in Portugal, including 3 children, that he had died. Back in Portugal,
my great-grandmother had an affair with a married man which produced one child, my grandfather. My
great-grandfather was a wealthy man in town and already had children of his own, who do not deny that my
grandfather is of blood relation. This is all I know about my great-grandfather. Since my mother had
retained the surname Loureiro in marriage, it was applied to my grandfather. I am terribly interested in my
great-grandfather, his name, origin, legitimate children, and possibly where they live. This mystery
intrigues me greatly, and if you are able to provide any information on the subject, I would appreciate it.
The story continues...my great-grandmother, who was living with her now 4 children and her father, married
once more, to a single, childless man who agreed to take on a paternal role; my grandfather referred to
this man as Pai (Father). After growing up content with having this stepfather, the eldest of my
great-grandmother's children receives a letter from her birth father in Brazil, who was elderly and dying,
and wished to see his children once more. Letter after letter followed, until my great-grandmother
finally told her children the story of her separation from her first husband. The first husband wished
to spend the rest of his days in Portugal, and moved back to his home (leaving behind another wife and
more children in Brazil). This scandal permeated the town's gossip mill, and, hoping to hide his wife's
bigamy from officials, my grandfather's stepfather went into hiding. My grandfather's siblings' (maternal)
children had scattered across Europe in their adulthood. Some remain in Portugal, although most live in
Belgium, Switzerland, France, and Australia. Unfortunately, there are no such stories of interest
(that I know of) on my grandmother's side. I would appreciate any information or stories with regard to
my family history that you would be able to provide me. All my thanks.
