Comments: I am trying to get past my great grandfather, "Manuel deBraga
Chaves". He was born on 27 Dec 1875 in Santo Espirito. We believe his father's
name was "Jose Chaves", but this is unconfirmed. We believe his mother's name
was Cousisson(maiden name not known). He had brothers Antone, Joseph, and
John, and sister Gloria. Gloria remained on the island with parents until
their deaths. Parents died in 1930's and nothing further is known of Gloria.
Manuel and his brothers emmigrated to the US(Massachusetts and Rhode Island)
in 1892 or 1896. Would love to find anyone researching the same names on
Santa Maria or any descendants of the sister who stayed behind.

Villages: Santo Espírito
Surnames: Andrade, Viegas
Comments: My grandfather, Jose Julio Andrade, was born in Santo Espiritu, Santa Maria, in 1871. (The
family name was sometimes written as "de Andrade.") His father, Manuel Andrade, was killed in an accident
in 1885. His widow, Maria (nee Viegas) remarried a few years later to a man named Chaves, and my
grandfather didn't get along with his stepfather, so in 1888 he emigrated to John Day, Oregon to work
for a Mr. Oliver (an Azores native who'd become a rancher). In 1905 he married Maria J. Borges (from
Rosais, Sao Jorge), and they had 3 children. He died in San Jose, CA in 1957 (his wife had died 10
years earlier). He had a younger brother, Augustin, who died in Fremont, CA in about 1968, and another
brother, Manuel, who lived in Modesto, CA and also died in the 1960's. They also had a sister and twin
brothers in the Azores, and two half-siblings (a brother and a sister) from their mother's second marriage.
A success story: When my grandfather left Santa Maria in 1888, his youngest siblings were twin brothers about
4 years old. My family assumed that they and their descendants didn't leave the Azores. But, after posting
my story on your web site, I heard from a couple of relatives I didn't realize I had: it turns out that the
descendants of one of the twins emigrated to Ontario, Canada. Also, their half-sister married and had
children, and some of them emigrated too and live in the same area. They use the names of Chaves (my
great-grandmother's second husband) and Viegas (her maiden name). Two years ago, I got an email from Jose
Viegas in Vila do Porto, Santa Maria, who turned out to be my third cousin: our great-grandmothers were
sisters. Our mutual great-great-grandfather was a butter and cheese merchant, also named Jose Viegas. My
cousin said that the name Viegas is rather uncommon in the Azores. In about 1800, a man named Viegas
came from Sao Jorge to Santa Maria to buy cattle, married a girl from Santo Espiritu, and stayed.
