Comments: Father Manuel M. Silva, born Santo Amaro, Pico, 8-31-1905, died
October 1978, married Margaret M. Brown (Machado) Sacto. Parents from Ribeiras.
Children Marlene (Knott), Gerald and James. My Dad came to this Country at
age 17 or 18, alone and unable to speak any English. He worked on the docks
in SF for awhile as well as for his uncle, John M. Silva, on a Pocket Area
farm in Sacramento. He later was employed as a carpenter for the S.P. R.R.
After more than 35 yrs. with the S.P. he retired. He lived most of his life
in the Land Park Area of Sacramento. He never returned to his home in the
Azores where he left his parents, three sisters and a brother. His brother
Roque, immigrated to the US around 1960 and lives in San Jose. My family and
I visited his Village in 1985 and I saw my aunts for the first time. They were
in there eighties and very happy to see us as we were to see them.

Creek, CA) married Maria Pimental at Boston, Mass. in 1860 under name of
Frank Williams, died and spent rest of life under name of Manuel Williams.
His father was Manuel Antonio das Neves Pereira born about 1810-died in 1863
and his mother was Isabella Thomasia Silveira born in 1809-died 1893 daughter
of the São Jorge Silveira's. All but Isabella's father were born at Prainha
do Norte.

maternal grandson of Manuel Francisco Serpa Hilario & Catharina de Jesus.
My grandmother was Maria Alice Serpa Ribeiro (born 18 Jun 1901),
daughter of José Serpa Ribeiro & Laudelinda Serpa, paternal granddaughter
of Andriano José Ribeiro & Ana Josefa, and maternal granddaughter of Antonio
Mariano de Serpa & Isabel de Sousa. I know that most of these relatives do
come from Prainha do Norte, but some may also be from São Roque. One of the
relatives used the alcunha of "Sangrador" since he performed
bloodletting. I am a nun and I live in Boston at the present time.

Comments: My parents emigrated to the US when I was five, from the island of
Pico in the Azores, the name of the village is "Prainha do Norte".
I speak fluent Portuguese and some Spanish. I was named after an uncle who
moved to Brazil. Ari is short for Aristotle, however, my name in the states
has been spelled "Ary" which can be difficult when travelling with a
different name on my passport. My mothers sur name is Bettencourt. I have
undertaken the efforts of discovering my families history. My work with
American Airlines has allowed me many opportunities to travel back to the
Azores.

Comments: I am searching for information about my father's grandparents. My
father's mother originates from the island of Sao Jorge from the area of the
Faja de Santo Amaro near the village of Velas. I am searching for some
information about her parents. Her name was Maria Fransisca Flores. Moreover,
I am searching for information about Jose Teofilo da Silveira, my father's
father, who originates from Santa Luzia from the island of Pico. I would also
be interested in finding some information about his parents and grandparents.
I am also researching my mother's side of the family. I have the names of both
her grandparents on the maternal and paternal side and would like to find out
any information about their parents. My mom's grandparent's on her father's
side were named Julio Augusto da Paz and Maria de Laudelinds da Rosa Brasil
and they originated from the island of Sao Jorge, Vila das Velas, from the
area of Degraus. Similarly, my mother's grandparents on her mom's side also
originate from Sao Jorge, Vila das Velas, and the area of the Degraus. Their
names are Maria de Lurdes Bettencourt and Antonio dos Reis Maciel. Any

Comments: My husband's grand father Antonio Viera was born Feb 8, 1847 in
Santo Antonio, Pico his parents are Joaquim Viera and Maria Constancia. He
had a brother Manuel born 1850 and a sister Maria. Antonio and Manuel came to
U.S in 1870. Antonio married Anna Garcia daughter of Antone Garcia and Mary
Frances Souza in Mission San Jose, Ca Sept 1, 1879. They lived in Hollister
and Watsonville, Ca. Some time Antonio changed the name from Viera to Vyeda,
he also used the name Fogaca (don't know why). Antonio and Anna had 4 sons
all used the name VYEDA. Anna Garcia had 2 sisters Rita and Mary and a brother
Frank. Frank married Mary Furtado in Tres Pinos Ca. They all lived in Niles,
Ca. I don't know why they married in Tres Pinos that is quite a ways from
Niles. Rita Garcia married Antone Lawrence and Mary Garcia married Manuel
Pemintel. I believe some of the Garcia family used the name Joseph and the
name Leal connects some where with the Garcias. I would like to know more
about the Viera family in Pico and why Antonio used the name Fogaca. I was
told that a Joaquin Garcia was a stage coach driver in Mendecino Co and I
think he is a brother to Antone Garcia. Does any one know any of these
