Comments: My grandmother, Mary (Maria?)Freitas, was born March 17, 1873 in
Ponta Delgada. She arrived in California probably in the 1890's. My
grandfather, Jose Lourenco (de Freitas) was born Dec. 6, 1862, village
unknown. He left home in 1880 (to avoid the draft, so the story goes) and
worked for six years as a sealer in South America. He arrived in California
in 1886 and worked in lumber mills and mines in Northern California. He
returned to the Azores in 1899 and attended the World's Fair in Paris,
returning to California in time to vote for McKinley for president. He
married Mary Freitas Silva, my grandmother, a young widow with 2 children
sometime between 1900 and 1902 and they lived near Red Bluff, CA for the rest
of their lives. No siblings, as far as I know, came with my grandmother, but
my grandfather's brother, Manuel Lourenco and his sister Mary Lourenco Murray
both came to California.

Comments: I am researching for the names da Simas, Simoes, Paes and Medeiros.
They are the great grandparents of my children. They came from Sao Miguel in
the late 1890s to New Bedford, MA. This is what I know about about Rosa da
Simas: She was born in the village of Achada in 1876 and died in New Bedford,
MA in 1966. She is probably buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery and I am
currently making those inquiries. She married Joseph Ferreira Simoes (?in Sao
Miguel or MA?). Their first child was born 20 May 1900 in New Bedford, MA.
Their children were Joseph Ferreira, Jr., Julio, Mary, John, Angelina and
Manuel. Her husband, Jos F. Simoes was also born in Achada in 1871 and he
died in New Bedford, MA in 1954. I married the only child of Joseph Ferreira
Simoes (Simmons), Jr, Alvin Joseph Simmons. I too remember hearing the island
of Pico mentioned by the family. I have a v. poor picture of Rosa da Simas.
Joseph F. Simoes (Simmons), Jr, married Elvira Page who parents were were
Antone Paes (Page) and Antonia demao Medeiros. Antonia Medeiros and Antonio
Paes were born in Ponte del Gardo (sp), villa de Franco. I believe that I
have found an Ellis Island entry for her with her maiden name for 1899 at age
30. I have a v. poor picture of this couple also.
These immigrants and their children are all deceased now so I must look to
records for family lineage. I have 5 married children and 9 grandchildren who
need and want to find their Portuguese heritage.

Comments: My great-grandfather, Manuel Raposo Mathias (1862-1934), came to
the U.S. from the Azores in 1883. He lived in Stockton, CA, between 1889 and
1906, working as a barber. He lived the rest of his life in Oakland, CA,
working in insurance and real estate. He was married to Maria Souza
(1859-1925), who also came from the Azores in 1883. There's some confusion
because a few records say her last name was Mendoza. Also, her father is
listed as Souza Bettencourt. My great-grandparents may have lived briefly
in New Bedford because Manuel's second wife was from there (her name was
also Maria--father's name was King; mother's, Faria). I'm trying to learn
about their families in Azores.

Comments: Sons looking for their mother, who emigrated to the United States of
America close to 30 years ago. Her name is Maria Eulália Pacheco de Oliveira and she lived at Rua
São Francisco Xavier (prior Rua do Bêco), Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores. She was also born in

aunts on their mother's side, also living in the state of California. Any and all information
leading to finding this person, Mrs. Maria Eulália Oliveira will be very welcome by her children
living here in the island. I, M.F. Melo was a resident of California for some time and when I

Comments: According to legend, and family heresay, I am to belive and understand my (family) lineage,
came from the Madeira Islands of Portugal, so the story goes. Now, after being handed a piece of paper
a year ago from my Aunt, (my mother's younger sister) I don't know what to belive at present. The paper
is a list of my relatives going back as far as my Great-Great Grandparents, who were born in Portugal.
John da Costa and Helena da Costa, are my maternal Great Grandparents. ( b. circa: Feb. 1869, d. 1958/
b. circa: Jan. 1877, d. 1962) Also, born in Portugal, presumably, according to this piece of paper in
Bertanha, Sao Miguel, in the district of Ponta Delgado, the Azores, this is what astounds me. Why have
I been told the Madeira Islands? The Portugese-Hawaiian historical book does not explain this that I
know of. John and Helena had 20 children, (Catholics, you know!) all born in Hawaii. Affectionally,
they were known to have the nicknames of, VO-VO, and VU-VU. My Grand-mother, (maternal, fifth in line
of 20) Mary (Maria) Katherine da Costa-Walker, died before I was born, 1902-1955. And, as of just
recently, my grand-Uncle, Justin(Justino) Costa passed away, the last of 20 living children ( 18th in
line, b. 1917, died this year June 2006). Majority of all my relatives are buried in St. Joeseph's
Catholic Cemetary in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii. Some are buried overseas, a few others', are buried across
the U.S. Apparently, according to legend, my GGGrand-parents were exiled to the Madeira Islands, from
a revolutionary Coup' on mainland Portugal, during the middle and/or 3rd quarter of the 19th century.
(I'm still trying to comprehend the connection between the Madeira Isl. and that of the Azores.) This is
what I know, what is said, is that we have (had) Royalty in our bloodline. My Ancestors are (said) to
have been Cousins to the Queen; What Queen? What Court? What Monarchy/ and or Dynasty? And, through
which bloodline? How did they end up on the Madeira Islands (Azores?), and what was the main reason to
immigrate to the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to the little known kingdom, then known as Maui, Hawaii?
What did they (my Ancestors) sacrafice over the Coup' de tat that caused them to relinquished major
titles, huge land, and great fortune? This is my curiosity, not to mention, My Legacy that I want and
need to learn. I have no claim, and I could care less. I need to prove or disprove my family ancestral
lineage. After all, I need know , how my Great-Grandfather became a land Baron and Rancher in Makawao,
Maui, Hawaii. I've always pictured him as this Mark Twain type of character. Any information regarding
my heritage would be greatly appreciated in advance, therefore, please go ahead and email me with
whatever stories and or facts you may have. Thank-you and Mahalo!

Sousa, came to New England sometime around 1915. He went by the name of Joe Rivers as a professional

involved in the gold business of South America. He invented some sort of gold ore separating device.
The rest of the Sousa family settled in New Bedford. His brothers were Joao, Jose, and Anton. After
his boxing years were over he made a living as a fisherman. His village of birth is Candelaria on the

Comments: Hello, I am searching for any records that may be available regarding my sister
who died in Feteiras, Azores between the year of 1965 to 1968. I have asked my parents for
information and they just don't remember. Her name would have been Saulina C. Raposo and that
is all I know unfortunatley. I am looking to obtain records of her death, what the cause was
and where she may be burried. I am taking a trip come 2/14/06 to St. Miguel, Ponta Delgada
and am hoping someone can direct me in a search. Any help would be appreciated.

Surnames: Dionizio, Martins, Rosa, Silva - all in village of Feteiras on Sao Miguel
Comments: I am trying to find information about my paternal grandfather (including when he
migrated to Hawaii and with whom) and any of his relatives who may currently live (or are buried)
on Sao Miguel. I will be on Sao Miguel this coming September and want to learn more about him and
the family he left back there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He went by the name of Manuel
D. Silva, but his gravestone and death certificate show him as Manuel Silva Dionizio (born 2-20-1867).
The certificate shows his father's name as Joseph and lists his mother's maiden name as unknown. He
was from the village of Feteiras. He migrated to Hawaii in about 1883 and died on the Island of Kauai
in 1926. I have searched all ship records available to me but have not found a Manuel D. Silva (of his
approximate age at time of migration) or a Manuel Silva Dionizio. In fact, I have not found a single
person with the surname of Dionizio in any of the records. Although I have quite a bit of information
about my Grandmother (Maria), information about her family back at Feteiras would also be appreciated.
She migrated to Hawaii at the age of 10 in September 1882 on the HANSA with her parents --- Antonio
Martins 46 and Jacintha Rosa 42 plus siblings Manuel 12, Alexandre 8, Joao, 5. Antonio parents (who
apparently stayed back at Feteiras) were Joao Martins and Rosa de Jesus.

Commments: Looking for any possible link to the name "FIGURIEDO" from the Island of Mosteiros
Portugal. I say any link because we are looking for a sibling born out of wedlock sometime
between 1944 and 1948. Since we do not have any name, except for the name of our sibling's
biological father, which is Figueriedo, we do not know much else. We do know that up until at
least the early 60's this male child lived in Mosteiros. Till at least the middle 60's he lived
with his mother who we do not know if she was even married or not. Today, he would be in his late
50's or possibly very early 60's. He is aware of his biological father's name, Figuriedo, who
passed away within the last couple of years. Because of the times back then, someone who lived
in Mosteiros their whole life and is somewhere in their 70's might remember the circumstances.
Mosteiros, particularly back then was a very small, close-knit community and everyone knew
everything that went on in the village. We would appreciate any information that we can try and
follow-up on. As this sibling is getting older, our chances of meeting him are getting smaller.
We are desperate for any information anyone can give us. Our hope is to find him and meet him
before its too late. Please help us if you know anything. Sincerely, Milu

Comments: My fathers maternal grandparents were Julia de Lima (father Manoel
De Lima and mother Francisca Candida) and Joaquim Pedro Ferreira. They were
married in Sao Pedro The Apostle Parish August 8, 1874. They came with their
daughter Mary who was 8 years old on the USS Suffolk to Hawaii and arrived in
August 1881. Their son Manuel was born on the voyage. Joaquim was also born
in this parish, and Julia was born in the Saint Peter Parrish of Vila Franca
do Campo District. Joaquim's parents were Joaquim Pedro Ferreira and Rita
Candida Pereira. In Hawaii they had children Augusta, Joseph, Louis, Elvira,
Jess, John and Antone. Some family members carried the Ferreira surname and
some used the Pedro surname altered to Peter. Their daughter Elvira Pedro
Ferreira was my grandmother and married Esteve Gonsalves de Silva in Hakalau
on the island of Hawaii May 23,1909.
I would be very pleased to make contact with anyone else researching this
family. Shirley Folston

Comments: I am trying to create a family tree for my friend. The PACHECO name
seems to be a popular name in Sao Miguel, and I have found out that my friend
is descended from Joseph PACHECO was born in the village of Sao Roque. Joseph
married Jacintha "Jessie" de Jesus COSTA (or vice versa). They had a son,
Antonio Pacheco born there in 1885. Antonio came to Massachusetts ~1905. The
MOURA name is much more difficult as I seem to be the only person researching
it. Because of this, I am wondering if it is a spelling variation of another
surname, or an abbreviation of another surname. All I know so far is that
Francisco "Frank" MOURA and Philomena "Phoebe" (ROSE) MOURA came from Sao
Miguel. But, I will have to do more research to find out which village they
came from. "Elsie" MOURA, their daughter, was born in Sao Miguel in 1893, and
came to Massachusetts in ~1905. Her parents came over separately, and there
were four younger children. (They might have been related to a "Tony" MOURA
in Brooklyn, NY.)

Comments: My mother's paternal last name, i.e. her maiden name, was Francisco.
Her mother's (i.e. my maternal grandmother's) maiden name was Gonçalves. My
maternal grandmother worked at the Chã Gorreano tea factory close to Ponta
Delgada. My father's last name, i.e. mine, is Serra. However his father (i.e.
my paternal grandfather) had the last name of DeBraga. My father's naming is
due to a request arising from the fact that my paternal grandmother had many
(12) children, and all the other sons (7) had been named DeBraga. When my
father and a few of the other youngest children were born, my paternal
grandparents decided there were enough descendants for the DeBraga name, and
so my father was given my grandmother's maiden last name, Serra. My paternal
grandmother's mother (my great grandmother) had the maiden last name, Tomaz.
Although I don't know for sure, I suspect she was also a resident of the
village of Maya. I do not yet have a homepage, but I can be reached via e-mail.
Please respond soon. I feel I have much yet to learn about this process.
