Comments: My grandmother, Mary (Maria?)Freitas, was born March 17, 1873 in Ponta Delgada. She arrived in California probably in the 1890's. My grandfather, Jose Lourenco (de Freitas) was born Dec. 6, 1862, village unknown. He left home in 1880 (to avoid the draft, so the story goes) and worked for six years as a sealer in South America. He arrived in California in 1886 and worked in lumber mills and mines in Northern California. He returned to the Azores in 1899 and attended the World's Fair in Paris, returning to California in time to vote for McKinley for president. He married Mary Freitas Silva, my grandmother, a young widow with 2 children sometime between 1900 and 1902 and they lived near Red Bluff, CA for the rest of their lives. No siblings, as far as I know, came with my grandmother, but my grandfather's brother, Manuel Lourenco and his sister Mary Lourenco Murray both came to California.

Comments: I am researching for the names da Simas, Simoes, Paes and Medeiros. They are the great grandparents of my children. They came from Sao Miguel in the late 1890s to New Bedford, MA. This is what I know about about Rosa da Simas: She was born in the village of Achada in 1876 and died in New Bedford, MA in 1966. She is probably buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery and I am currently making those inquiries. She married Joseph Ferreira Simoes (?in Sao Miguel or MA?). Their first child was born 20 May 1900 in New Bedford, MA. Their children were Joseph Ferreira, Jr., Julio, Mary, John, Angelina and Manuel. Her husband, Jos F. Simoes was also born in Achada in 1871 and he died in New Bedford, MA in 1954. I married the only child of Joseph Ferreira Simoes (Simmons), Jr, Alvin Joseph Simmons. I too remember hearing the island of Pico mentioned by the family. I have a v. poor picture of Rosa da Simas.
Joseph F. Simoes (Simmons), Jr, married Elvira Page who parents were were Antone Paes (Page) and Antonia demao Medeiros. Antonia Medeiros and Antonio Paes were born in Ponte del Gardo (sp), villa de Franco. I believe that I have found an Ellis Island entry for her with her maiden name for 1899 at age 30. I have a v. poor picture of this couple also.
These immigrants and their children are all deceased now so I must look to records for family lineage. I have 5 married children and 9 grandchildren who need and want to find their Portuguese heritage.

Comments: My father, Antone Nunes, came from Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores with his father and mother around 1900. My grandfather was a whaler out of New Bedford, Mass., where he died. My father had no contact with me after 1959 and I am searching for any relatives in Sao Miguel. My father had a cousin Edward Nunes who lived in Providence RI. Any information on the Nunes Family would be so welcome.

John Mathias, 611 Howard St., Glendale, CA 91206 USA
Email: jmathias10@earthlink.net
Date submitted: Thu, 07 Oct 2004
Village: possibly Ponta Delgada
Surname: Mathias
Comments: My great-grandfather, Manuel Raposo Mathias (1862-1934), came to the U.S. from the Azores in 1883. He lived in Stockton, CA, between 1889 and 1906, working as a barber. He lived the rest of his life in Oakland, CA, working in insurance and real estate. He was married to Maria Souza (1859-1925), who also came from the Azores in 1883. There's some confusion because a few records say her last name was Mendoza. Also, her father is listed as Souza Bettencourt. My great-grandparents may have lived briefly in New Bedford because Manuel's second wife was from there (her name was also Maria--father's name was King; mother's, Faria). I'm trying to learn about their families in Azores.

Comments: According to legend, and family heresay, I am to belive and understand my (family) lineage, came from the Madeira Islands of Portugal, so the story goes. Now, after being handed a piece of paper a year ago from my Aunt, (my mother's younger sister) I don't know what to belive at present. The paper is a list of my relatives going back as far as my Great-Great Grandparents, who were born in Portugal. John da Costa and Helena da Costa, are my maternal Great Grandparents. ( b. circa: Feb. 1869, d. 1958/ b. circa: Jan. 1877, d. 1962) Also, born in Portugal, presumably, according to this piece of paper in Bertanha, Sao Miguel, in the district of Ponta Delgado, the Azores, this is what astounds me. Why have I been told the Madeira Islands? The Portugese-Hawaiian historical book does not explain this that I know of. John and Helena had 20 children, (Catholics, you know!) all born in Hawaii. Affectionally, they were known to have the nicknames of, VO-VO, and VU-VU. My Grand-mother, (maternal, fifth in line of 20) Mary (Maria) Katherine da Costa-Walker, died before I was born, 1902-1955. And, as of just recently, my grand-Uncle, Justin(Justino) Costa passed away, the last of 20 living children ( 18th in line, b. 1917, died this year June 2006). Majority of all my relatives are buried in St. Joeseph's Catholic Cemetary in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii. Some are buried overseas, a few others', are buried across the U.S. Apparently, according to legend, my GGGrand-parents were exiled to the Madeira Islands, from a revolutionary Coup' on mainland Portugal, during the middle and/or 3rd quarter of the 19th century. (I'm still trying to comprehend the connection between the Madeira Isl. and that of the Azores.) This is what I know, what is said, is that we have (had) Royalty in our bloodline. My Ancestors are (said) to have been Cousins to the Queen; What Queen? What Court? What Monarchy/ and or Dynasty? And, through which bloodline? How did they end up on the Madeira Islands (Azores?), and what was the main reason to immigrate to the middle of the Pacific Ocean, to the little known kingdom, then known as Maui, Hawaii? What did they (my Ancestors) sacrafice over the Coup' de tat that caused them to relinquished major titles, huge land, and great fortune? This is my curiosity, not to mention, My Legacy that I want and need to learn. I have no claim, and I could care less. I need to prove or disprove my family ancestral lineage. After all, I need know , how my Great-Grandfather became a land Baron and Rancher in Makawao, Maui, Hawaii. I've always pictured him as this Mark Twain type of character. Any information regarding my heritage would be greatly appreciated in advance, therefore, please go ahead and email me with whatever stories and or facts you may have. Thank-you and Mahalo!

Comments: My Grandfather (Avô) was Francesco Tavares, [b. Jan 18, 1986 in San Miguel, Azores]. He came to the USA before 1911 and settled in Fall River, MA. He married my Avó on the 8th of May 1911 in Fall River, MA. His parents were Joao Tavares and Helena De Medeiros they lived somewhere in San Miguel. They had at least one other son, my brother thinks it was John or Joao Tavares, and he had at least 3 kids, I remember a Cousin Tony Tavares (wife Mary) from Portsmouth, RI., a Mary Tavares Mendes from Fall River, Ma and a Brother Emmanuel (who was possibly born Francesco Tavares before joining the Jesuit Order). Unfortunately none of my aunts and uncles are alive any longer so I don’t have any more information on this branch of my family. My Grandmother (Avó) was Maria Miranda who came here with her family aboard the vessel CANOPIC. It departed from St. Michaels, Azores, Portugal, and arrived at the Port of Boston, Boston MA. on the 13th of NOV 1905. Her parents were Manuel Viveros Miranda and Alminda (or Arminda) Souza, I think they were married on Feb 2, 1891 in BRETANHA, ST. MIGUEL, AZORES. They came here with 2 sons and 2 daughters, my Avó, Manuel D., Francisco (Frank), and Gilda. While here they had another daughter Demontina. They came to Fall River and stayed with a brother-in-law listed as Manuel Carvahlo at 94 Alden St. Fall River MA on the ships manifest. Alminda Souza’s parents were Francisco Benevides Souza and Maria Lorenda also both listed as being from the Azores. My Grandparents had 8 children. From oldest to youngest they are: Manuel Antone, Francisco (Barney) Jr, Benjamin (died as infant), Benjamin (He was my Father), Maria Rosa, Antonio, John, and David. If anyone has these people in their genealogy PLEASE, PLEASE let me know, this is a dead end for me and I would truly appreciate it.

I am not sure of her origins, however her father, Manuel Arvila was involved in the gold business of South America. He invented some sort of gold ore separating device. The rest of the Sousa family settled in New Bedford. His brothers were Joao, Jose, and Anton. After his boxing years were over he made a living as a fisherman. His village of birth is Candelaria on the island of Sao Miguel. I am making a trip to the island soon for the first time. I would greatly love to speak with anyone who might be related to him. If there are any relatives still living there, I would be very excited to try to contact them. Thank you.

Comments: Hello, I am searching for any records that may be available regarding my sister who died in Feteiras, Azores between the year of 1965 to 1968. I have asked my parents for information and they just don't remember. Her name would have been Saulina C. Raposo and that is all I know unfortunatley. I am looking to obtain records of her death, what the cause was and where she may be burried. I am taking a trip come 2/14/06 to St. Miguel, Ponta Delgada and am hoping someone can direct me in a search. Any help would be appreciated.

Comments: I am trying to find information about my paternal grandfather (including when he migrated to Hawaii and with whom) and any of his relatives who may currently live (or are buried) on Sao Miguel. I will be on Sao Miguel this coming September and want to learn more about him and the family he left back there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He went by the name of Manuel D. Silva, but his gravestone and death certificate show him as Manuel Silva Dionizio (born 2-20-1867). The certificate shows his father's name as Joseph and lists his mother's maiden name as unknown. He was from the village of Feteiras. He migrated to Hawaii in about 1883 and died on the Island of Kauai in 1926. I have searched all ship records available to me but have not found a Manuel D. Silva (of his approximate age at time of migration) or a Manuel Silva Dionizio. In fact, I have not found a single person with the surname of Dionizio in any of the records. Although I have quite a bit of information about my Grandmother (Maria), information about her family back at Feteiras would also be appreciated. She migrated to Hawaii at the age of 10 in September 1882 on the HANSA with her parents --- Antonio Martins 46 and Jacintha Rosa 42 plus siblings Manuel 12, Alexandre 8, Joao, 5. Antonio parents (who apparently stayed back at Feteiras) were Joao Martins and Rosa de Jesus.

Commments: Looking for any possible link to the name "FIGURIEDO" from the Island of Mosteiros Portugal. I say any link because we are looking for a sibling born out of wedlock sometime between 1944 and 1948. Since we do not have any name, except for the name of our sibling's biological father, which is Figueriedo, we do not know much else. We do know that up until at least the early 60's this male child lived in Mosteiros. Till at least the middle 60's he lived with his mother who we do not know if she was even married or not. Today, he would be in his late 50's or possibly very early 60's. He is aware of his biological father's name, Figuriedo, who passed away within the last couple of years. Because of the times back then, someone who lived in Mosteiros their whole life and is somewhere in their 70's might remember the circumstances. Mosteiros, particularly back then was a very small, close-knit community and everyone knew everything that went on in the village. We would appreciate any information that we can try and follow-up on. As this sibling is getting older, our chances of meeting him are getting smaller. We are desperate for any information anyone can give us. Our hope is to find him and meet him before its too late. Please help us if you know anything. Sincerely, Milu

Comments: Through my father's military records, which I just acquired, I found a cousin in Bridgewater. Mass. And in turn have learned a great deal about the paternal side of my family. My father died about 20 years ago and I just didn't pay attention to the history of his parents and thier immigration to the U.S. from San Miguel, Azores. Now I am sorry and am trying to find out all the information I can to pass down to my daughter. Here is the information I already have through my cousin Joseph, whom I have not met in person yet, we have exchanged letters(he does not have a computer) and we have spoken on the phone. My grandparents were born in the village of St. Michael on San Miguel Island in the Azores. In and around 1877. My grandfather's first name was William, born on April 10,1877. My grandmother's maiden name was Sousa or Souza. Also born in St. Michael. They immigrated to America on the Penninsular out of the port of Pontu Del Garda, Azores. They arrived at Ellis Island on Sept. 6, 1901. They lived in Bridgewater, Mass. up till 1929 or 1930, they had owned a grocery store and lost it in the depression and then moved to California for jobs. My grandfather built a house on Crapo St in Bridgewater and had 7 sons and 1 daughter: Their names were: Alfred, Joseph, Frank, John, George, William, Lewis(my father) and Mary Starr. Comments: I wrote to you about my grandfather and you posted his story on your web page. I just found out that he came over on the ship Lusitania on Sept. 5, 1912 into NY. He came under another name and that's why I couldn't find him, but I kept digging. He came under the name Louis Canas. I sent for a copy of the ships passenger lists. I got a copy of his info on his green card in hopes that the name of the village would be on it. It only listed Lisbon, Portugal, no village. I will wait for the copy of the passenger list and hope that the name will be there. The man's name that he used, I'm assuming he must've known and hopefully the village will be there even if it's under Louis's name. I will let you know.

2010 update: I submitted my grandfathers name over 10 years ago. I thought he was born in Lisbon, Portugal. I got a copy of his WWI draft card. He was born in Ponta Delgada, St. Michael, Azores. He was born October 15, 1891.

Comments: I have done some searching on my mother's side. Both her parents were Portuguese whose parents and grandparents migrated between1870-1890 to Hawaii. They were fisherman. Later, much of the family moved to California. I am stuck on two lines in particular:
My GGrandfather Jose Joseph Enos ANTONE, was born 1850, SaoMiguel Isl., Portugal. He was married 1886, Hawaii, Hawaii to Maria Angelica CODEIRO. And he died the 4 of Jun. 1907 in Olaa, Hawaii, Hawaii. (His wife Maria was born May 1868, San Jose, Ponta Delgada, Portugal, and she died after 1907 in ,, Hawaii.)
I am also stuck with my GGrandmother, Maria RAPOSA. I have that she was born 1875, Portugal. She married Antonio FONTES in 1893 in Hilo, Hawaii, Hawaii. (Antonio was born 1872 Conceicao,,Sao Miguel Isl., Portugal.)
The other surnames listed are the parents of CODEIRO and FONTES. If there is anyone who could help me, please let me know where to go. Also if anyone is interested in the other surnames listed, I'd be happy to provide you with the other information I have.

Surname: Teves, de Teves
Location: San Jose Parish, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores
Comments: I am looking for any information anyone can supply me regarding the de Teves family on San Miguel. My great grandfather, Luis Jose de Teves, was born there in 1848. He immigrated to Hawaii with his wife, Maria Carlota Branca (born 1851) in late 1879 on the British bark, High Flyer, arriving in Hawaii on January 24, 1880. This is all I know. I would like to trace my family as far back as possible. I believe I may be an ancestor of Pedro de Teves (or possible named Pedro Teves Cordeiro) who was born on San Miguel about 1440. Any information would be appreciated, especially if you have any knowledge on my great grandfather, his family and his ancestors. Thank you!

Comments: My fathers maternal grandparents were Julia de Lima (father Manoel De Lima and mother Francisca Candida) and Joaquim Pedro Ferreira. They were married in Sao Pedro The Apostle Parish August 8, 1874. They came with their daughter Mary who was 8 years old on the USS Suffolk to Hawaii and arrived in August 1881. Their son Manuel was born on the voyage. Joaquim was also born in this parish, and Julia was born in the Saint Peter Parrish of Vila Franca do Campo District. Joaquim's parents were Joaquim Pedro Ferreira and Rita Candida Pereira. In Hawaii they had children Augusta, Joseph, Louis, Elvira, Jess, John and Antone. Some family members carried the Ferreira surname and some used the Pedro surname altered to Peter. Their daughter Elvira Pedro Ferreira was my grandmother and married Esteve Gonsalves de Silva in Hakalau on the island of Hawaii May 23,1909.
I would be very pleased to make contact with anyone else researching this family. Shirley Folston

Great Granparents born back in 1876? Can give more detail if neccesary. I am new to geneology and would welcome any tips. Surnames: Moura, Pacheco
Comments: I am trying to create a family tree for my friend. The PACHECO name seems to be a popular name in Sao Miguel, and I have found out that my friend is descended from Joseph PACHECO was born in the village of Sao Roque. Joseph married Jacintha "Jessie" de Jesus COSTA (or vice versa). They had a son, Antonio Pacheco born there in 1885. Antonio came to Massachusetts ~1905. The MOURA name is much more difficult as I seem to be the only person researching it. Because of this, I am wondering if it is a spelling variation of another surname, or an abbreviation of another surname. All I know so far is that Francisco "Frank" MOURA and Philomena "Phoebe" (ROSE) MOURA came from Sao Miguel. But, I will have to do more research to find out which village they came from. "Elsie" MOURA, their daughter, was born in Sao Miguel in 1893, and came to Massachusetts in ~1905. Her parents came over separately, and there were four younger children. (They might have been related to a "Tony" MOURA in Brooklyn, NY.)

Date submitted: before 1998
Surnames: Braga, Gonçalves, Serra, Tomaz.
Comments: My mother's paternal last name, i.e. her maiden name, was Francisco. Her mother's (i.e. my maternal grandmother's) maiden name was Gonçalves. My maternal grandmother worked at the Chã Gorreano tea factory close to Ponta Delgada. My father's last name, i.e. mine, is Serra. However his father (i.e. my paternal grandfather) had the last name of DeBraga. My father's naming is due to a request arising from the fact that my paternal grandmother had many (12) children, and all the other sons (7) had been named DeBraga. When my father and a few of the other youngest children were born, my paternal grandparents decided there were enough descendants for the DeBraga name, and so my father was given my grandmother's maiden last name, Serra. My paternal grandmother's mother (my great grandmother) had the maiden last name, Tomaz. Although I don't know for sure, I suspect she was also a resident of the village of Maya. I do not yet have a homepage, but I can be reached via e-mail. Please respond soon. I feel I have much yet to learn about this process.

They traveled with their children Maria, 29, Jose, 21, Jorgina 13, Antonio 11, Maria 8 and Alexandrina. Jorgina was my great grandmother. The family worked on sugar plantations near Lihue, Kauai. By 1900, Estevao, daughter Maria and Alexandrina were living in Honolulu. Between 1894 and 1900, city directories and the census shows him working as a stonemason. He must have died sometime before 1910 because he does not appear in that census.

Surnames: Correia / Correa in S.Barbara de S. Antonio
Comments: I'm looking for anyone with ties to the Correa/Correia family(ies) in S. Barbara de S. Antonio on S. Miguel. I found that as recently as the late 1950's I had an aunt there by the name of Maria Madelena Correia. In addition to her, I know she were 2 brothers that stayed on S. Miguel, as well as 2 brothers that came to the US - Henry Jacome Correa and my great-grandfather, Clement Correa. Their father was Manuel Correa (a police officer) and Antonia Joanna (not sure if that is her middle or last name) Henry and Clement came to the US around 1903, started in the Boston and Fall River areas then headed west to Staten Island, finally settling in Stamford CT.

Her father Francisco ARRUDA (b. 1861 or 1871=d. 1922 in NB, MASS) Married Maria LUIZA(b. 1860). Francisco's parents are listed as Audrew and Rosa DAJESUS. I was told that Francisco and his wife Maria came to the united states and then sent for there children. They lived in New Bedford, Mass. Again Happy researching. Amy

Comments: I know my grandparents were from Sete Cidades on St. Michael. Their names were Manuel Arruda and Deolinda Jordan (Maiden name) Arruda. They came to this country around 1904, and settled in New Bedford, Mass, and had 8 children. My mother was one of them. My grandmother's mother's name was Mary Hillary. Her father was a priest on St. Michael, Peter Mederios. Mary Hillary's mother never married Father Mederios. There are stories that there were more children, but I can not prove this. I also believe that my grandfather's father was a famous singer and guitar player, who drown in a lake there, at a very early age. Am looking forward to anyone writing with families from the Azores!
