Comments: My great-grandmother's name was Amelia Margarita de Amaral and she
was born on Flores in 1845. I do not know what village she came from on that
island. She married Jose Pereira d'Avila from Horta, Faial (I don't know when

I would like to hear from anyone who is also researching the surname de Amaral.
I am seeking information on what village she may have come from. My cousins

Surname: Graca
Comments: Joao Jose Graca was my husband's great-grandfather. He was born on
April 15, 1836 and died on Sept. 14, 1893. I believe he founded the first
newspaper on Faial and taught journalism there. I have a copy of his obit in
Portuguese which is as follows:
"Foi o introdutor da Imprensa e do jornalismo no Distrito da Horta em
10-1-1857. Quando Presidente da Camara, fundou a Biblioteca Municipal da Horta
em 1886. Advogado, Pedagogo, Reitor e Professor do Liceu da Horta, tendo
excercido tamben as funções de Presidente da Junta-Geral. Nasceu na Horta em
15-4-1836. Faleceu na Horta em 14-9-1893."
There follows several paragraphs which a friend says is mostly a description
of where he lived. The second page is missing which may have had family
information. His son Joseph M. Grace Jr. came to New Bedford as a cabin boy
on a whaler. He was born in 1865 in Horta. He married Ana Vincencia da
Silveira in New Bedford in Nov. 1891 and died in Dartmouth MA in 1950. His
daughter Mary Rosamund Grace was my husband's mother. I would appreciate
hearing from anyone researching the Graca/Grace family.

emigrating to the US as a young teenager after receiving a modest inheritance.
He may have paid for passage, worked as ship's crew or been a stowaway. He
married Rose Mathews in 1879 (at age 16!) and had one son, Edward. They were
divorced and he married my grandmother, Mary Ann Rogers, in 1888. He lived

sound Greek and French or old Latin, Sephardic Jews also. Very broad minded
on religion, catholic on paper only. Mostly Christian Scientist, or spirtulist,
at a time when that was not tolerated. Also very tall, most (6'-6'6" in
height for men, 5'6"-5'10" inches for woman) not like most Azoreans
in looks. Lots of green eyes, blond and light brown hair in family. Women
very, very pretty, thin and tall, not short and stocky like most there. I
have been there many times we sure stick out at the feasts!
