I am proud to present the original

Portuguese Ancestral
Photo Gallery

As the name suggests, and as more participate, this is where you will find pictures of our Portuguese ancestors from all over the world.

Similar to the arrangement of the Portuguese Genealogist Master List, the pictures will be grouped together based on location, if known, so that we hope there will eventually be enough pictures to get an idea of what the people from a particular location looked like.

Check back from time to time to see the new pictures.

Guideline to submissions

It's really very simple. Just send your best possible pictures
to me at and I will post them for you here.

We don't need to get complicated.
Just take a picture with a digital camera of your photo or put it into your scanner (for better results) and create a picture (such as a JPEG or GIF) and I will post it after making it fit this format.

There is no need to make it really big for this purpose (in case you know how) because for proper display on a website, the picture can be smaller than 1-megabyte. But don't worry about it. If you can see it well on your computer, I will figure out how to see it well online. If you send me a picture that is too large, I will simply make it smaller for you. You just need to know how to take a picture and send it by email.

I don't want you to send pictures in the mail for me to scan.
I don't want to be held responsible for them.
Just get a friend or family member to help you, if you need it.

Even though as of this moment there are no pictures posted,
don't wait to start your submissions.
We are now accepting them, so send them over now.

It would be best to send one picture with one message. If you have more than one picture, send each one separately and that will help us keep things organized and the people properly identified. Please give the name of the person/s in the photo, along with the date or your best estimate, and the location where it was taken, if known.

Each submission will have a note below the picture, such as this:

Sean Peixoto is just a name I made up. If you also happen to have a submission in the Portuguese Genealogist Master List or an ancestor is listed in the Family Histories section and now want to include a picture with your submission, I will link your submission with the picture.

And if you don't know who people are in a photo, this could be a good chance to post it and see if someone in the future recognizes them. I will be happy to include your contact e-mail address underneath the picture, if you want that.

There is no limit to how many pictures you can submit.
The more the merrier! I would like to eventually see thousands of photos.

I hope you are as excited as I am about this new idea!

I have started to post my own family pictures to get things started.
And I hope you will join in soon.

So what are you waiting for?!

Orientação para o envio de fotos

É realmente muito simples. Basta enviar as melhores fotos que você tiver

Manuel Joaquim Leal, born in Piedade, Pico
c1870

Manuel Joaquim Leal and his family
c1881
He had 5 childen, all born in Chile. The 3 surviving girls moved to Angra, Terceira in 1882.
If this picture was taken in 1881, the woman on the right must be his wife.
However, if this was taken after his arrival in Angra, it could be his maid, Mariana Morgada,
with whom he had a child.

This man is likely from Terceira and could be my relative. This is from a photo in the collection of my grandfather's sister, Angelina Holmes, who had resided in the San Francisco Bay area of California. The man might just be a friend, but is more likely a relative or in-law.
